Outdoor Space at the Bill Library

Ledyard Garden Club in collaboration with the Bill Library & Ledyard Public Works Dept designed and installed new gardens at the Bill Library and were opened by the Mayor of Ledyard in a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in June 2014.

      • The Ledyard Garden Club continues to nurture and maintain the Bill Library Gardens as one of the civic gardens maintained by the Club in Ledyard and Gales Ferry.
      • The Bill Library Gardens are a wonderful Community space and amenity in the heart of Ledyard where patrons can enjoy the gardens and outdoors and be used for Library programs.

      Timeline and Funding

      • Fall 2013 / Winter 2014: landscape design and hard landscaping to install a Rain Garden, patio and walkway, terracing, planter box and shrub gardens.
        • Public Works installed the patio and walkway, terracing with stone walls and a planter box
        • Christie Landscaping provided volunteer hours & expertise to create the Rain Garden earthworks
        • The Garden Club designed gardens focused on providing year-round garden interest, including spring bulbs and shrubs that provide fall or winter interest, and native plants that attract native birds and insects
        • The Garden Club selected plants for the Rain Garden, primarily perennials, that tolerate both wet and dry conditions, are low maintenance and have a wide variety of bloom time. The gardens are a riot of color from Spring through Fall
      • Planting by the Club initiated in Spring 2014 and continued through 2015, 2016, into 2017
      • In March 2016, the Club installed a bluebird house and water bath to encourage bluebirds to establish nesting in the Gardens. We had nesting bluebirds in our first year!
      • Funding was provided in part by the Ledyard Garden Club (using proceeds from our Annual Plant Sale and plants donated by Club Members) and the Town of Ledyard in addition to grants received from the Community Foundation of Eastern CT, Pfizer Foundation, Friends of the Ledyard Libraries, CT Master Gardeners and stone material from a local stone mason (Ken Geer).
