Gales Ferry Memorial Parklet

The Gales Ferry section of Ledyard honors war veterans with a small park and monument. The Memorial Parklet, at the intersection of Military Highway and Hurlbutt Road, was created in 1920. The park features a granite monument, dedicated in 1956, that features an eagle atop a 7-foot column. A dedication on the monument’s shaft reads, “Dedicated to the men and women who served their country in all wars.” (source: CTMonuments.net)

In 2016, the Ledyard Garden Club adopted the Gales Ferry Memorial Parklet

  • Over successive growing seasons, Ledyard Garden Club volunteers have beautified and continue to maintain the Parklet with the addition of shrubs and annuals.

Timeline

  • The new garden was established, planted with shrubs and mulched (April/May 2016).
  • The initial plantings in the garden were completed in time for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Memorial Parklet (May 2016)

Funding

  • The project was funded using a Pfizer Foundation grant received by the Club.
  • The Garden Club continues to maintain the Memorial Parklet, including planting annuals, using proceeds from our Annual Plant Sale.
